AAANZ 2025 Conference | First Nations Open Panel | Submissions due Friday 3 October

Unruly Art in the Colony – Sovereign Art Histories: First Nations Open Panel

Jess, one of the conference organizers for this years conference, themed Unruly Objects, at the University of Western Australia on Whadjuk Noongar boodja invites First Nations friends to particpate in an open panel for the conference Unruly Art in the Colony – Sovereign Art Histories. As a Palyku woman and Indigenous Studies academic, Jess would love for this edition to create a real space for First Nations art histories and stories, welcoming feedback and ideas from First Nations friends anytime. Jess can be reached on email  jessyca.hutchens@uwa.edu.au or phone 0476 591 495.

Some of the things being done for this edition include curating more sections of the conference to include First Nations voices that might not usually engage with AAANZ; as well as making sure the conference is embedded in local protocols and centre Noongar histories in this curation.

Apply for an open panel with First Nations participants

The conference convenors have also created an open panel stream Unruly Art in the Colony – Sovereign Art Histories for First Nations speakers to apply to as well, and really welcome any submissions or ideas if you like to participate in any way. Jess is available to have a chat if you think you might be interested. It’s a bit more open-ended that the usual panel / application format and will centre discussions between and amongst First Nations participants throughout the conference. Jess’s hope is that there can be a lot of different spaces for First Nations particpants to tell your stories in different ways, and that inclusion is meaningfuly. If you’d like to participate in a different way but don’t feel there is a panel topic for you, there is opportunity to also look at curating something more specific.
