AAANZ | AIAH ART HISTORY RESEARCH GRANTS 2021 | Entries Open for 2021

The AIAH Art History Research Grants are open to an art historian, early career researcher or PhD student in Art History in one of the following categories:

  • Institutional art historian (i.e. working in an academic or cultural institution such as a university, art museum, public library)
  • Independent art historian
  • Emerging art historian (PhD student or Early Career Researcher in Art History i.e. PhD granted no earlier than 1 January 2016)
  • Indigenous Australian, New Zealand Maori or Pasifika art historian

The AIAH Art History Research Grants will be announced during the conference IMPACT to be held online by the University of Sydney.

About the Grants

Eligibility

To be eligible for a research grant, you need to be an art historian, early career researcher or PhD student in Art History in one of the following categories:

  • Institutional art historian (i.e. working in an academic or cultural institution such as a university, art museum, gallery, public library, etc)
  • Independent art historian
  • Emerging art historian (PhD student or Early Career Researcher in Art History, i.e. doctorate awarded no earlier than 1 January 2016)
  • Indigenous Australian, New Zealand Maori or Pasifika art historian

You also must be a member of the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand (AAANZ). You can join here

Selection criteria

Preference will be given to projects that support new scholarship, show originality and push research into new areas both in the field and individually for the scholar and will be judged on:

  • Academic merit of project
  • Track record and capacity of applicant

Successful Grant Recipients

There will be six scholarships awarded of $5,000 and the grant recipient will:

  • Accept the award online within 7 working days
  • Expend all funds within 12 months of receipt unless permission has been granted by the selection committee
  • Submit a final report

Application process

Eligible applicants must submit:

  • A short Curriculum Vitae (CV) of one page
  • A description of 300-500 words outlining the project to be undertaken, rationale, significance of the project and the resources required
  • Literature review of 300-500 words that outlines current scholarship, positions the applicant’s project within current research and explains its point of difference
  • Budget (one page). Please include notes against line items outlining relevance to the project
  • A statement outlining a clear rationale for the budget expenditure and how it will progress/support the project
  • If travel is included in the budget please provide an explanation about the purpose, intended outcomes and relevance to the project
  • Letters of support are required from participating institutions if collaborations, workshops or events with other institutions are part of the project
  • Two academic references (names and contact details)
