Call for Panels

The Melbourne Conference Committee invites proposals for panels for the AAANZ conference, to be hosted by Monash University, and The University of Melbourne, 1 – 3 December 2022.

Key details

The Call for Panels has now closed.

Conference Theme: Demonstrations

The AAANZ Annual Conference for 2022 is prompted by the idea of ‘DEMONSTRATIONS.’

For some this might raise the idea of political advocacy in relation to Indigenous land rights, the global pandemic, climate crisis, and social injustice. For others it might provoke questioning of traditional demonstrations of art history: the exhibition, the catalogue, the curator, and physical artworks. For yet others it may evoke the idea of thinking through making and its connection to conceiving artistic practice as research. How might we re-conceive our disciplines in light of these concerns, and demonstrate our disciplinary role as advocates for re-thinking our histories, and engagement with communities, institutions, and other spaces?

Who Should Apply?

The AAANZ welcomes proposals from artists and curators, knowledge holders and elders, writers and activists for 90-minute panels, as well as other presentation formats—such as lecture-performance, roundtable discussions, interviews, participatory workshops, film screenings and studio demonstrations.

Please note that the conference will be fully-online this year, with a number of on-site / in-real-life keynotes, launches and workshops in Melbourne.

What do you need to apply?

The online application form will ask you to provide:

  • Panel Convenor(s) (2 maximum) contact details.
  • A panel proposal (of no more than 250 words) that describes the theme and topics your panel will address, and a description of the panel format.

Please note: All conference participants will need to be AAANZ members and will need to pay a conference registration fee (which we will keep as low as possible).

Convenors should consider the AAANZ 2022 Conference Organising Principles when proposing panels.

Panel Formats

All panels will be allocated 90 minutes and must allow at least 30 minutes for audience questions and discussion.

A standard “research panel” comprises no more than 3 speakers, each delivering a research paper of maximum 20 minutes, along with a brief introduction by the convenor(s).

If you would like to propose an alternative format, please describe this carefully in your application. Alternative formats might include roundtable discussions, performances, short talks, workshops, etc.

What Happens Next?

The Committee will notify all panel proposers of the outcome of their submission in May.

In May, the Committee will publish all successful Panel Proposals. Individuals will then be invited to submit paper proposals directly to Panel Convenors.

Panel Convenors will then be required to confirm their full panel participants, including verification of each participants’ AAANZ membership, by July.
