The SHAPE Futures EMCR Network aims to support, connect and advocate for early and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) working in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts for People and Environment (SHAPE) disciplines across Australia. The SHAPE Futures Executive Committee is recruiting EMCRs interested in these objectives to take on a role within the Network Executive. Obituary | David Hansen

David Hansen (12.05.1958—13.01.2024), one of the most gifted and accomplished art historians in Australia, has died unexpectedly in Hobart, Tasmania. An alumnus of the University of Melbourne, his commitment to historical enquiry underlay much of his astonishing range of contributions to art history, curatorship, and the artistic community. In recognition of the quality and extent of his scholarly publications, the University of Melbourne awarded him a Doctor of Letters (PhD by publication) in 2004. Newsletter | President’s Report | December 2023 Advocacy This year was dominated by debate in the lead up to the October referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. AAANZ issued a statement in support of the Voice acknowledging it as an important step towards Treaty. Following the referendum we released a follow-up statement recognising the deep pain many people were experiencing and reaffirming our commitment to Treaty, truth-telling and self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Vale Ted Snell

AAANZ pays tribute to Ted Snell  who was a tireless advocate for the arts in Western Australia and his legacy is one that encouraged students, artists and the sector to thrive. Edgar William (Ted) Snell AM, CitWA (1949 – 2023) was born in Geraldton, Western Australia. He completed an Associateship in Art Teaching in England and undertook his postgraduate study in Birmingham. AAANZ Statement for The Voice

The Uluru Statement from the Heart, presented at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, calls for the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice enshrined in the constitution. With over 250 signatures from some of the remotest communities in Australia, it makes a poignant plea to build a better and fairer future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people around the country.
