War, Art and Visual Culture
The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art, Issue 1 for 2020, War, Art and Visual Culture will be edited by Professor Charles Green, School of Culture and communication, University of Melbourne; Professor Ana Carden-Coyne, Centre for the Cultural History of War, University of Manchester; Associate Professor Kit Messham-Muir, School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry at Curtin University; and Dr. Uros Cvoro, senior lecturer UNSW Art & Design.
The editors are seeking research papers that explore the complexities of contemporary art in relation to war and political violence, examine historical themes in light of contemporary events, and explore artistic practice in the context of broader contemporary visual culture. Topics may include, but are not limited to: affect and images of suffering; thinking beyond the trauma paradigm; explorations of aestheticizing and depoliticising images of violence and its aftermath; populism and national identity; the visual culture of war in the age of President Trump; the problematics of aftermath images; the contemporary military/technological/digital/political ‘sublime’.
This Special Issue of ANZJA is part of Art in Conflict, a three-year ARC Linkage project led by Curtin University in partnership with the Australian War Memorial (AWM) and National Trust (NSW) and in collaboration with an international academic team from University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales and University of Manchester.
The editors seek Expressions of Interest by 9:00pm (AEST) 31 March 2019. Email your Expression of Interest to kit.messham-muir@curtin.edu.au and include the title of your proposed paper and an abstract of no more than 350 words. Editors will then select a short list of papers and invite authors to submit full papers by 10 July 2019.
