Event | Art History and Curatorship Seminar | Friday 10 October

You are invited to a special Art History and Curatorship Seminar discussion to celebrate the release of two new books, on Friday, 10 October, at 10:00 – 11:00 am AEDT, in person and via Zoom.
This seminar will comprise a lively discussion based on the publications: Writing Borderless Histories of Art: Human Exceptionalism and the Climate Crisis, the latest monograph by Claire Farago, and Transcultural Histories of Art and Artisanal Epistemologies: Knowledge to Be Made, a new edited volume from Claire Farago, Susan Lowish and Jens Baumgarten.
Speakers:
Claire Farago, Professor Emerita at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Jens Baumgarten, Professor of Art History at the Federal University of São Paulo.
Susan Lowish, Senior Lecturer in Australian Art History at the University of Melbourne.
To be introduced by: Professor Lisa Slade, Hugh Ramsay Chair of Australian Art History.
For this discussion, speakers will ask: How can the concept of artisanal epistemologies open a dialogue with First Nations ways of knowing, without reabsorbing them into Western categories? What methodological lessons can Australian art history draw from transcultural approaches? And, can artisanal knowledge serve as a bridge between contemporary First Nations art practices and historical modes of making?
