Background
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the Northern Territory’s premier cultural organisation. Our principal facility since 1981 is on Larrakia Land at Bullocky Point in Darwin, home to internationally renowned cultural and scientific collections and research and exhibition programs.
The Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) were founded by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in 1984, and remain the nation’s first, most prestigious and longest-running awards dedicated to Indigenous art and artists. Telstra has been the major sponsor since 1992, with 2020 marking the 29th anniversary of the partnership.
Each year the Telstra NATSIAA attracts approximately 300 entries from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists across Australia. The process of selecting the finalists for the Awards is managed by a panel of three suitably qualified experts in the field of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.
This panel is chaired by MAGNT’s Curator of Aboriginal Art, Luke Scholes, with the other positions being held by external professionals. The tenure of each panel last for a period of three (3) years, at the conclusion of which 2 new external members will join the panel. Since 2017, the Telstra NATSIAA selection panel has consisted of MAGNT’s Curator of Aboriginal Art, Luke Scholes, Hetti Perkins, writer and former Curator at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Clotilde Bullen, Senior Curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. 2019 marks the conclusion of the three year tenure of the existing panel.
Invitation
MAGNT is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified candidates to fulfill two (2) vacancies on the Telstra NATSIAA selection panel.
MAGNT is inviting applicants with the following experience and attributes:
- A broad knowledge of contemporary Indigenous art practice
- A familiarity with the oeuvre of established and emerging Indigenous artists
- A strong knowledge of the geographic, linguistic and art producing regions of Indigenous Australia
- In-person experience of artist’s work that may assist in the interpretation of digital images
- The ability to engage with Indigenous networks to attract entries and participation from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
- The ability to advocate on behalf of the Awards locally and nationally and on occasion represent MAGNT and NATSIAA at formal and informal occasions
- The ability to work as part of a team
- Knowledge of the history of Telstra NATSIAA
Requirements
MAGNT is seeking applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to work alongside MAGNT’s Curator of Aboriginal Art. Selection panel members will be required to sign an agreement to provide selection panel services. This contract will commence in April 2020 and expire on 31 December 2022. This agreement will include a code of conduct. Selection panel members must be available for travel to Darwin for a period of three days during April 2020-2022 (exact dates to be determined).
MAGNT will provide:
- Flights, accommodation and per-diems for all Telstra NATSIAA duties
- A contractors fee broken down into 3 annual payments
