Job | Curator of International Art – Pre 1980 | Art Gallery of South Australia
The Curator of International Art pre-1980 is primarily responsible AGSA’s collection of international paintings, sculpture, and time-based media pre-1980. The position also contributes to the operations of the Gallery’s department of international prints, drawings and photographs, under the direction of the Senior Curator, Prints, Drawings & Photographs.
The position has a significant role in the Gallery’s innovative and inspiring artistic program by curating exhibitions related to International Art pre-1980 and taking curatorial responsibility for incoming touring exhibitions in this field; and contributing to the associated public programs and publications.
Centrally located on Adelaide’s cultural boulevard, North Terrace, the AGSA’s collection of 45,000 works of art comprises Australian, European, North American and Asian works. This exceptional collection exists for our audiences – to comprehend the past, to navigate the present, and as a potent avenue to imagine the future.
Key Outcomes
- Ensure the high quality and sound development of the collection by formulating acquisition strategies; seeking out, researching, documenting and recommending acquisitions; and establishing and maintaining links with artists, collectors, gallerists and donors.
- Ensure the accurate and thorough documentation and research of the collection by cataloguing, researching and maintaining files, and ensuring the integrity of these records.
- The curating of innovative and inspiring permanent collection displays and temporary exhibitions and generating related interpretative material.
- Contribute to the presentation, research and public programs associated with touring exhibitions (internal and external) as required.
- Presenting talks on the collection, exhibitions and displays to diverse audiences in a range of contexts.
- Writing articles, essays, catalogues and books on the collection and writing for relevant exhibition catalogues.
- Ensure the efficient management and care of the collection by programming conservation; ensuring the safe storage and handling of this collection; and ensuring the day-to-day maintenance of the Gallery’s permanent collection display.
- Maintain current knowledge in the specialist field by visiting exhibitions and keeping up-to-date with the relevant literature, and by establishing and maintaining professional contacts with artists, dealers and colleagues in Australia and internationally.
Special Conditions:
- Out of hours business work will be required
- Interstate travel will be required.
- International travel may be required.
Essential Qualifications:
- Degree in Art History, Fine Arts or other relevant discipline.
- Tertiary qualifications in Museum Studies (desirable).
- Experience working as a collection curator in an art museum, including experience in curating exhibitions.
- Thorough knowledge of International art pre-1980, particularly British, European and American art, with specialist knowledge in the fields of painting, sculpture, time-based media, prints, drawings & photographs.
- Quality report and publication-standard writing skills along with excellent oral presentation skills.
- Experience maintaining existing relationships and building new networks with external stakeholders to raise the profile of the Gallery.
- Proven ability to exercise sound aesthetic judgement and knowledge of the methods of handling works of art.
- Experience in cataloguing and researching works of art.
