He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. Its purpose is to be a creative catalyst for art and ideas, offering transformational experiences that strengthen and enrich communities. The Gallery’s vision is to be the home of art for Auckland, its people and visitors to its internationally recognised award-winning building. Established in 1888, the Gallery holds a preeminent collection of New Zealand art and a significant collection of international art, and presents a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, public engagement and outreach activities.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmakiis excited to announce the establishment of the position of Curator Pacific Art to further increase awareness, understanding and advocacy of Pacific art. This new role will enable targeted research, collection and exhibition development, while fostering closer dialogue within our Pacific communities. It aims to increase access to Pacific art and give greater visibility to Pacific narratives in the Gallery’s collection and their context in Aotearoa New Zealand.
He kōreromōu: About you
As an experienced curator, you have a track record of developing innovative exhibitions of Pacific art and working closely with artists of Pacific heritage. You have a high level of cultural competence in engaging within our Pacific communities and are committed to increasing public access to and knowledge about Pacific art.
You will have:
- A post-graduate qualification in Art History or related discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of recent curatorial experience, preferably in art museum context
- An understanding of the principles of Treaty of Waitangi and biculturalism as they relate to the Gallery and its programmes
- Strong knowledge of Pacific art and demonstrated experience working with Pacific artists
- Strong research skills and publishing experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Advanced cultural competency in engaging within Pacific communities, including an understanding and demonstration of leading with community respect
- Familiarity with a collection database (preferably Vernon)

This is an excellent opportunity for a curator building their career to gain experience at Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading visual arts institution. Start date will be in January 2020. The role is a full-time contracted position for a fixed-term of three years.
You will work standard business hours, though you will need to be available for weekend talks, evening events and projects as required, on a regular basis.
