This is Jess, I’m one of the conference organizers for this years conference, themed Unruly Objects, at the University of Western Australia on Whadjuk Noongar boodja. As a Palyku woman and Indigenous Studies academic, I would love for this edition to create a real space for First Nations art histories and stories. I’d welcome feedback and ideas from First Nations friends anytime. Reach me on jessyca.hutchens@uwa.edu.au and 0476 591 495.
Some of the things we’re doing for this edition include curating more sections of the conference to include First Nations voices that might not usually engage with AAANZ; as well as making sure we are embedded in local protocols and centre Noongar histories in this curation.
Apply for an open panel with First Nations participants
We have also created an open panel stream Unruly Art in the Colony – Sovereign Art Histories for First Nations speakers to apply to as well, and really welcome any submissions or ideas if you like to participate in any way. We can just have a chat if you think you might be interested. It’s a bit more open-ended that the usual panel / application format and will centre discussions between and amongst First Nations participants throughout the conference. My hope is that there can be a lot of different spaces for us to tell our stories in different ways, and that inclusion is meaningful and usual to us! If you’d like to participate in a different way but don’t feel there is a panel topic for you, we can also look at curating something more specific.
Anyway reach out anytime!
Best,
Jess
