Art Monthly Australasia is Australasia’s flagship visual arts publication, providing a critical platform for its artists. Published since 1987, it is Australasia’s only visual arts magazine placing visual arts in a contemporary, historical, and regional context. In 2024, Art Monthly seeks to undertake a focused revision of the magazine, with intent to relaunch with a new vision grounded in local and global Indigenous visual arts and design practices by early 2025. The 2024 print schedule will remain unchanged.

Art Monthly is seeking an outstanding Editor to help shape the future of the publication in its fourth decade of publication. The Editor will be responsible for producing, commissioning, and publishing quarterly print content, along with collaborating with commissioned guest editors, and managing digital publishing for national and international audiences. The fulltime editor position is designed for those who wish to work flexibly; the Editor will work with the Art Monthly team based at the Australian National University in Kamberri/Canberra and will report to the Chair of the Art Monthly Australasia Board.

Based at the Australian National University since 1992, Art Monthly is a non-profit charitable organisation whose income is derived from sales of the magazine, advertising, sponsorship, and government funding. Its board comprises leaders in their fields of visual arts scholarship, practice, and curating, along with business and finance.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The successful candidate will play a key role in leading the reimagining of Art Monthly, working closely with its Board of Directors, as we enter a new era. Working in collaboration with commissioned writers, guest-editors and artists, the successful candidate will facilitate the development of editorial content, ensuring quality, clarity, creativity, authenticity, and consistency is achieved. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing production schedules and the implementation of all aspects of the publications program, including briefing, commissioning editorial content, design, copy-editing, proofing, print production, copyright clearance, overseeing grant applications, negotiating publication partnerships, distribution arrangements, and contributing to marketing and promotion of publication.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
• Intellectual and creative vision to shape the publication’s future.
• Experience in commissioning, writing and editing articles, comment, critique, notes and news for print and online audiences.
• Familiarity and experience with production and design for visual arts publishing including print and digital environments.
• Extensive knowledge of Australian art history, particularly First Nations art history, and contemporary visual art.
• Strong visual arts network connections nationally and within the Great Ocean (AsiaPacific) region.
• Strategic planning ability and experience in managing budgets and marketing and promotion applicable to the magazine.
• Experience in seeking sponsorship, collaboration, philanthropic support, grant applications to federal, state and other relevant funding agencies.
• Proven ability to supervise staff and to manage, encourage and develop the resources of a small office team.
• Tertiary qualifications in Art, Art History or other relevant areas or equivalent experience.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead all aspects of editorial including print, online, eDM and social media.
• Source images for print and online editorial.
• Write, copy edit, proof and fact-check to publication requirements.
• Maintain communications with galleries and PR representatives.
• Identify and apply for funding opportunities.
• Maintain and update AMA’s style guide, editorial policies, and publishing requirements.
• Arrange for copyright permissions as required.
• The role requires occasional travel for media previews, art fairs, launches etc.
