He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Established in 1888, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a leading visual arts institution in New Zealand with more than 17,500 artworks and over 150 archival collections.

This is an opportunity for a qualified senior librarian and archives manager to work in the Auckland Art Gallery’s E. H. McCormick Research Library.  As one of the finest art libraries, it plays a leading role in the collecting, care of, and access to, New Zealand art resources. It is the first point of contact for many researchers, writers and academics, as well as members of the public.

This role has a strong focus in developing the Research Library collections and is responsible for ensuring the care, preservation and promotion of its collections, as well as managing two staff members.

He kōreromōu: About you

Key responsibilities will include leadership of the Research Library and staff training to develop professional expertise in the team and wider gallery. You will provide the Research Library with direction and implement strategic objectives. You will be adept at finding innovative ways to broaden access to research collections including contributing to digital and online strategies, exhibitions and publications.

  • Maintain and develop the print, archival and ephemeral research resources
  • Manage and develop the Library’s digitisation programmes of audio-visual, image and textual material
  • Continue to develop the Library’s important art archive collections, including acquisition planning, development and advocacy
  • Project management of improved storage and housing of the research collections
  • Supervision of the cataloguing of all library collections to enable and promote access
  • Maintain and develop the Library’s relationship with other art libraries, and membership of ARLIS (Art Libraries Society of Australia and New Zealand)

This is a career role for a forward thinking and innovative library manager keen to contribute to the enhancement of the Gallery’s research and archive collections. You will bring your strong relationship building skills to this role and liaise with various stakeholders to promote library collections, digital projects and exhibitions.

To be successful you will have a professional library qualification (MLIS or equivalent) and a degree in art history or a related discipline.

You will be an expert in preservation practices for library and archives material and be knowledgeable around current copyright legislation regarding the visual arts, text and websites.

Must have a least 5 years’ experience working at a senior level.
