Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. Its purpose is to be a creative catalyst for art and ideas, offering transformational experiences that strengthen and enrich communities. The Gallery’s vision is to be the home of art for Auckland, its people and visitors from its internationally-recognised award-winning building. Established in 1888, the Gallery holds a preeminent collection of New Zealand art and a significant collection of international art presented alongside a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, public engagement and outreach activities.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior curator to join Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. The Senior Curator – International Art, is responsible for the research, display and interpretation of the Auckland Art Gallery’s historical and modern international art collections, including the Mackelvie Collection, and will work on the delivery of a major international programme of exhibitions and events.
Your key purpose will be to increase the awareness, understanding and enjoyment of works of art across the Gallery’s collection of historical and modern international art through exhibitions, lectures, publications, symposia and digital initiatives. You will also work on incoming touring exhibitions of historical and modern international art.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You are an experienced senior curator with a demonstrated track record of delivering major exhibitions and publishing activity in the field of historical and modern international art. You will already be a highly regarded curator at the top of your field with strong international networks and experience in exhibition-making and collection development. Strong relationship building skills are essential as you will work on team projects with a diverse range of people both within and outside of the organisation.
You will also need:
- A post-graduate qualification in Art History or related discipline
- Minimum of 5-10 years of recent curatorial experience
- Knowledge of at least one European Romance language other than English would be highly desirable
- Proven ability to provide the intellectual and creative direction required to develop, plan for and prepare exhibitions, including the selection and layout of works, negotiation of loans, preparation of texts and interpretative material
- Strong research skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Familiarity with a collection database (preferably Vernon)
