This symposium explores a key period in American art to focus on two tendencies generally regarded as polar opposites—minimalism and photo-realism. Minimalism’s impact is traced in works using light, land and installation art, as well as through feminist practice and in architecture, to examine resonances today. The importance of realism, a much-neglected aspect of the period, is also considered.
Building on from two highly successful past events—Action. Painting. Now. (NGA 2012) and Minimal. Conceptual. Pop. (AGNSW 2013)—this symposium seeks to expand the dialogue between American and Australian artists, art historians and cultural critics.
