Barbara Moore, CEO of the Biennale of Sydney, has been appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic, recognising her contribution to arts and culture and the development of international cultural relationships.
Presented by the French Ministry of Culture, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is one of France’s highest cultural honours, recognising individuals who have distinguished themselves through artistic creation or contributions to the influence of arts and culture internationally.
The honour was conferred at a ceremony hosted by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore at Sydney Town Hall, attended by His Excellency David Martinon, French Ambassador to Australia.
Moore has worked in the arts for more than two decades and has served as CEO of the Biennale of Sydney since 2019. She is also a Board Member of the International Biennial Association.
Reflecting on the significance of the honour, Moore said:
“Cultural diplomacy is about building genuine relationships — between artists, institutions, communities and countries — over time. Those relationships matter particularly when the world feels more divided.”
The recognition comes as Australia prepares to be Guest of Honour at Art Paris in 2027, highlighting the importance of international cultural exchange and collaboration.
Moore joins an international community of artists and cultural leaders recognised through the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Previous Australian recipients include artist Tony Albert, architect and arts patron Penelope Seidler, arts patron Dr Gene Sherman, former Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron, and cultural figures including Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave and Cate Blanchett.
The Biennale of Sydney, established in 1973, is one of Australia’s leading international contemporary art events, bringing together artists, institutions and audiences from across Australia and internationally.
