  • Bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and Culture to the world stage

An opportunity to create a strong space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agency, voice and connection to country.

The National Aboriginal Art Gallery, based in Alice Springs, will be the centrepiece of the Territory Arts Trail and will be a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture. We are looking for an experienced and talented curator to join the Project Team responsible for the developing this ground-breaking Gallery.

As the Assistant Director Curatorial and Exhibitions, you will be responsible for developing the Gallery’s approach to content, exhibitions, and related programming. You will achieve this in partnership with the Senior Director, and through building strong collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with local and national collecting institutions, art centres and artists, education and research institutions, Government agencies and other stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities include providing expert advice, developing curatorial and exhibition strategies, identifying resources and managing budget to deliver the Gallery’s opening programme. You will also be responsible for ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agency, voice and connection to country has a strong presence in development and delivery of content, exhibitions and programmes.

To be successful, you will have extensive curatorial/exhibition experience at a senior level, with demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual culture as well as well-established national and international networks in the cultural heritage space. Inclusive practice should be second nature to you, and you’ll be experienced in creating – and co-creating – powerful exhibition experiences.

A tertiary qualification in curation, museum studies, cultural studies or other related field with prior experience and training as a senior manager in a related institution – or equivalent experience – is essential, as is extensive experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and an exceptional knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual culture, particularly contemporary practice.

In return, you receive a competitive salary, 6 weeks annual leave and the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in a culturally rich society.
