The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers a multi-disciplinary course of study, focusing on art history and film art. VS admits about 30 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students each academic year.  The BA (Hons) in Visual Studies curriculum emphasises the history and theory of visual arts and culture in Asia and beyond from ancient times to the contemporary period. It also offers students practical, object- and skill-based learning through studio practice, video production, curating and internships. The Department offers one MA in Curating and Art History and another MA in Creative and Media Industries. VS is inviting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Assistant Professor to contribute to teaching and research in the areas of art history and curating. The appointee is expected to: 1) teach relevant courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate final projects; 2) conduct research projects and publish outputs with high impact; 3) apply for grants and develop projects on knowledge transfer; and 4) contribute to service and development of the Department.

Applicants who can teach a wide range of subjects (e.g. pre-modern Chinese art, East Asian art, visual culture, curatorial practice) are of particular interest.

General Requirements

Applicants for the position should have a PhD in art history or a relevant discipline, preferably with a specialisation in pre-modern Chinese art. Key criteria for shortlisted candidates include: (i) Ability to teach courses on art history and museum studies; (ii) A proven record of research potential in the specialism, such as grants awarded and publications in peer-reviewed journals of good international standing; and (iii) Strong commitment to knowledge transfer and related activities.

Shortlisted candidates are required to provide information about their research records, evidence of high-quality teaching in relevant subjects as well as research and publication plans. 

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive.  The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, research leave, conference leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. The appointee is entitled to apply for both internal and external grants in support of his/her teaching, research and conference activities.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of two years, starting from mid-August 2021. Subject to the University requirements, funding availability, review of appointee’s performance and mutual agreement, re-appointments may be made on fixed term contracts for periods of up to three years.
