2022 AAANZ Conference | DEMONSTRATIONS

Monash University and The University of Melbourne

1 – 3 December 2022

AAANZ Annual Conference for 2022 is prompted by the idea of ‘DEMONSTRATIONS’.

For some this might raise the idea of political advocacy in relation to Indigenous land rights, the global pandemic, climate crisis, and social injustice. For others it might provoke questioning of traditional demonstrations of art history: the exhibition, the catalogue, the curator, and physical artworks. For yet others it may evoke the idea of thinking through making and its connection to conceiving artistic practice as research. How might we re-conceive our disciplines in light of these concerns, and demonstrate our disciplinary role as advocates for re-thinking our histories, and engagement with communities, institutions, and other spaces?

AAANZ welcomes panel proposals exploring themes such as:

  • Indigenous land rights, including the significance of Country, language, performance, and sovereignty
  • Knowledge production through practice
  • Effecting change through manifestos, utopias, dystopias, and magical thinking
  • Contestations of art history through innovative approaches, especially those engaging audiences outside traditional institutions
  • The exhibition as process, enactment, and re-enactment
  • The role of the artist or curator as advocate and/or activist
  • The ethics of locatedness and practice, including cross-cultural exchanges
  • Critiques of technology from decolonial perspectives, and responses to museum digitisation, digital conservation, and the rise of the NFT
  • Queer, feminist, and First Nations historiographic methods
  • Open Session

Conference Format

The 2022 AAANZ Conference ‘DEMONSTRATIONS’ is co-hosted by the Centre of Visual Arts, University of Melbourne and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Monash University.
