The Gallery’s vision is to be the home of art for Auckland, its people and visitors to its internationally recognised award-winning building. Established in 1888, the Gallery holds a preeminent collection of New Zealand art and a significant collection of international art, and presents a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, public engagement and outreach activities.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is looking to appoint a new Curator, Māori Art to further increase awareness, understanding and advocacy of Māori art. This role enables targeted research, collection and exhibition development, while fostering closer dialogue with iwi and Māori communities. It aims to increase access to Māori art and give greater visibility to Māori narratives in the Gallery’s collection and their context in Aotearoa New Zealand.
He kōreromōu: About you
As an experienced curator, you have a track record of developing innovative exhibitions of Māori art and working closely with artists of Māori heritage. You have a high level of cultural competence in engaging within our Māori communities and are committed to increasing public access to and knowledge about Māori art.
You will have:
• A post-graduate qualification in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Māori Studies or related discipline
• Minimum of 3 years of recent curatorial experience, preferably in art museum context
• An understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and biculturalism as they relate to the Gallery and its programs
• Strong knowledge of Māori art and demonstrated experience working with Māori artists
• Strong research skills and publishing experience
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Advanced cultural competency in engaging within Māori communities, including an understanding and demonstration of leading with community respect
• Familiarity with a collection database (preferably Vernon)
