Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a cultural leader in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Gallery’s vision is to be the home of art for Auckland, its people and visitors to its internationally recognised award-winning building. Established in 1888, the Gallery holds a preeminent collection of New Zealand art and a significant collection of international art, and presents a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions, public engagement and outreach activities.

The Gallery is pleased to announce two paid curatorial internship opportunities to develop the skills of emerging and early career Māori arts professionals. These paid intern positions are intended to provide a valuable learning opportunity and develop the skills of people committed to pursuing a career in art galleries and museums. Each internship has a slightly different focus. The first intern will work closely with our new Curator, Māori Art and the second intern will work with the Gallery’s Curator, Contemporary Art on upcoming projects.

He kōreromōu: About you

You are passionate about Māori and New Zealand art and keen to pursue a career working in the art gallery and museum sector. You have strong oral and written communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment. You have a strong level of cultural competence in engaging within our Māori communities and are committed to increasing public access to and knowledge about Māori and New Zealand art.

Applicants will demonstrate the following attributes:

  • A tertiary qualification in Art History, Fine Arts, Design, Māori Studies, Curatorial Studies, Museums Studies, or relevant field.
  • Passion for contemporary Māori and New Zealand art and interest in New Zealand art history
  • Experience working in a support role to curators or academics as an intern or research assistant is desirable
  • Experience working on exhibitions is desirable
  • A record of published writing on art is desirable
  • Experience keeping detailed records, including minute taking and report writing
  • Experience using collection management software (preferably Vernon CMS) is desirable
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • A commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and biculturalism as they relate to the Gallery and its programmes

This is an excellent opportunity for a curator building their career to gain experience at Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading visual arts institution.

These roles are fixed term contracts 9 to 12 months fixed term contracts, working 40 hours per week Monday to Friday.   You will work standard business hours, though you may need to be available for weekend talks, evening events and projects as required, on a regular basis.
